The most important difference of roller shades and roman shades is related to its mechanism when pulling up and down such as when opening and closing the shades. The roller shades is more straight forward since it only pulls up and down the fabric and winds in the head tube while roman shades mechanism is a bit more complex with its elaborate strings that folds the fabrics to push it up or down.  It is both a very good option for blocking unwanted sun-rays.

Unlike Roller Shades which is simply a large fabric attached in its mechanism, Roman Shades consist of slats that folds horizontally under one another when rolled up.
